Music Production Careers

Introduction

Are you wondering how to “sell my music” or “sell my songs?” If you write and record you own original music, I have a career for you. Write, Record & sell Production Music teaches you about the Production Music business and how to get your music sold to a Production Music Library. The library buys your music and gets it placed in TV shows, commercials and more. You earn royalties for years and years to come. How much money are we talking? Tens of thousands of dollars annually are not uncommon at all. The author of the book made around $80,000.00 from 18 songs in just 5 years. Really. You can too. His experience is nothing out of the normal. The book’s author, Richard Hughes was simply a common, everyday musician with a small home studio and a love for writing and recording music.

There are lots of sites and products that sell hopes, dreams and snake oil. This is not that. This is about a very real and authentic way to earn great money from your original music. Lots of people are doing it and I hope you’ll know I am very sincere. This is a straight up, 100% honest presentation. (Well, sort of. We use the phrase “sell my music” and “sell my songs” a few too many times on this page. It’s solely meant to help search engines know this webpage is about “selling your music”. We hope you’ll forgive us if we get carried away. It might have helped you find us and for that, it’s worth it. That said; let’s start selling your music!)

What is Production Music?

Production music is the music used in many TV shows and commercials. Imagine if you work for a TV show or a production company and you needed music for a production, where would you get it? It often comes from what is called a Production Music Library. These libraries have thousands of songs that are easy to license and use in a production. It’s kind of like stock photos, but with music. If you’re making a magazine ad and you need an amazing photo, you could get it from a stock photography site, the same is true here. People like Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones write production music. You can too. Really. You can be a regular musician or songwriter in your small home studio and have songs sold to the same library as people like Snoop and Quincy. That’s pretty cool.

How the Production Music Business Works

The book explains how the business works and how your music actually ends up on a TV show, for example. I explain everything as it pertains to a career in the business. I get right to the point and skip the BS. This book was written to get you quickly up to speed and to get right to the point. I want you to be able to take action right away. Action is power and it feels good to get in control quickly.

Production Music and Super Stars

Some musicians have one goal in mind. Superstardom. They will not be satisfied until that goal is met. Cool. In the meantime, they are often waiters, work at music stores or have other regular jobs. Nothing wrong there, it’s just that you could be making great money and asking people if they heard your music in that great new commercial rather than asking “if they’ll have fries with that.” There is plenty of room to sell some of your songs to a library and keep the gems for your personal music career. The book explains how to bridge the gap and make the most of both worlds.

The Composer Agreement and the Delicate Ego

If you’re going to get into this business, you’ll need to know how the contracts work. You’ll also need to know the different types of libraries that exist. Some are “royalty free” libraries while others are traditional production music libraries. They have a different business model. One is generally much better for you than the other. The book explains which is better and why. It also explains the common contracts you’ll see and what to lookout for. You need to know this stuff if you want to sell your music. Write, Record & Sell Production Music also explains how to ask for “production costs” which is basically money you’ll get paid when you sign a deal with a library. You need to know this.

Copyright, Music Publishing and Performance Rights

Copyright. Many songwriters are worried about the rights to their songs and how to protect themselves. In truth, this seems to be less of an issue these days, but you’ll get an overview into copyright as it pertains to the songwriter.  You’ll also want to know who ends up owning your music and how that all goes down. The book explains it fully.

Music publishing is the life-blood of the business. It’s how you’ll earn most of your money. You’ll need to be signed up with BMI, ASCAP or SESAC in most cases. The book explains why and how you’ll get paid by these organizations. You’ll also learn how to get signed up with one of these performance rights organizations. Check it out, BMI pays every quarter. That means you’ll get a check for what could easily be thousands and thousands of dollars every three months. This often goes on for years and years. You write the music once, record it once, sell it once and get paid for what seems like an eternity and you do NOTHING to keep getting paid. Once a library gets your music out there, it can be used over and over again, for many years. You just keep getting paid over and over and over. This is no BS. It’s exactly the truth. If it sounds too good to be true, sorry… but it’s still true. If you’re still asking how to “sell my music,” I hope you’re starting to see the light.

Writing Production Music

Most people think they can just write some music and send it off to a library to buy. WRONG. Production music follows some simple but crucial guidelines. You’ll need to know these so when you send your music off, its ready and a library could buy it right away. An important example of proper editing is ending your songs very quickly, with a simple resolving chord or phrase that sums up the entire song quickly. Why? Imagine your music is used in a TV show and all of the sudden, they need to cut to commercial. If your music has a quick, resolving ending, they edit that musical ending in just before the commercial. Perfect. There are a number of other guidelines that are important to know and the book covers them all. You need to get this right and the book explains how.

Recording Production Music

While Write, Record & Sell Production music is by no means a book about recording techniques (that would require volumes all be itself), it delves into the basics and gives you an overview of the processes that will help get you where you need to be. Will you need to master your own recordings? The book answers that question and many more. Once again, Write, Record & Sell Production has one main focus and it’s to arm you with the knowledge you need to make this career happen.

Get Your Music Reviewed!

There is an option to get your music reviewed by the author, Richard Hughes. You’ll get direct feedback from him, someone established in the business that can help you make sure your music is ready to go. He’ll be listening for all the pointers and tips suggested in the book and will help make sure you’re ready to go. Look for the “Review Pack” when buying the book. You can’t get much better feedback than this! He already jumped through all the hoops and can save you lots of time and hassle.

Submitting Your Music to the Libraries

Once you have your music written, recorded and edited properly, it will be time to start sending it to the libraries. In this section of the book, I cover how to go about sending your music into the libraries. While there are no guarantees that every library will listen to your music, you can take a number of steps to honor the process and get your foot in the door. I reveal some of the best methods around. You’ll learn the best practices for submitting your music.

Your Questions Answered

If your questions are good enough, they’ll end up in the next update to the book.

Get Motivated. Make it Happen

Most musicians and songwriters do NOT know about this business. Production music is right in front of us on TV all day long. It’s heard in commercial after commercial and TV show after TV show, but I never seem to wonder where that music comes from and how it got there. This is a very low key industry and that is good news for you as the reader of this. It means now is still the time to get in on it.

You’re reading this. You got this far. Take the next step and buy the book. It’s a small investment and one that has helped excite, breathe life into and change the reality of many people. Take a look at our Testimonials for reviews and feedback from lots of buyers.

Production Music Library Contacts List

Product Review: Write, Record & Sell Production Music

"Write, Record & Sell Production Music is your number one source for all the information that is needed to get you, the composer, started in a new musical endeavor called Production Music. As a musician and composer himself, Richard addresses the concern that many composers have when considering the selling of their own music. The book takes you thru the basic elements of the industry but always keeps you, the reader, in mind by explaining what you might come across and have to consider in each situation. Never forgetting the artists that we all are, the book also talks about the business side of production music and shows how you can make a living from writing, recording and selling your music. Have fun and good luck."

Product Review: Write, Record & Sell Production Music

"I am a professional composer/orchestrator/arranger and I want to let you know how much of a revelation your coursebook was on Production Music. I have always been interested in how the music you hear on TV, Radio, Film Trailers, Games, etc. was acquired. Most of my career has been spent with live stage music for the Musical Theatre, Stage Shows and some Classical/Symphonic work.

Your course explained, essentially, everything needed to get into the field. From the overview of Production Music itself, how libraries work and the various types, the kinds of deals available, the forms of payment and royalties, how to submit to libraries, and even the appropriate mentality or outlook, I feel the book is thorough and comprehensive. I particularly appreciated the segment explaining the parameters of how the music should be structured, what the libraries and music supervisors are looking for.

Of course, possibly the biggest value is the list of Production Music libraries. Honestly, this was what really convinced me to invest in the book. It would take a great deal of effort to compile this list without any real knowledge of the field. I actually visited every single site on the list (a few each night). I feel I came away from that experience with a very realistic sense of what the libraries carry and which ones might be right for me. In addition you have links to information about music supervisors and other industry resources.

I can honestly say that your coursebook is more than just a great introduction to Production Music. In fact, it is a step-by-step guide that shows you all you need to know to enter the field. I downloaded the book knowing virtually nothing and finished with a real sense of understanding what production music is and how to go about the attempt to enter the field. Well worth the investment."

Richard Pryde Hughes III

My music has been used in shows like, well, click here to see a recent BMI statement of mine. Don't just take my word for it. LOTS of places you know very well.

I was born in Las Vegas in 1972. The first song I ever remember hearing is The Beatles "Fixing A Hole." Lucky, I know. I got into music super young with Kiss being my first favorite band, mainly due to their killer look (and the times - it was the 70's!). I had plenty of "Tennis Racket Guitar" sessions in the music room listening to them. I then got deep into Rush and saw them at my first concert at the age of 8. A laser spectacular indeed. My dad was a major music enthusiast so I had plenty to listen to growing up. I started playing guitar at 14 and attended the guitar program at the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles at the age of 17. After school I was in numerous bands in Las Vegas including Mama Zeus (Zeppelin influenced Rock), Automatic Taxi Star (Pop Rock) and The Side Room (Trip Hop). All my bands had quite different styles. I never got the record deal I was looking for and after buying home studio gear, I decided to write my own music, by myself. I ended up selling lots of it to a major Production Music library in 2006 and have been enjoying the fruits on my work ever since.

I also have a deep spiritual awareness and spend lots of time focused on growth, contribution, love, the identity and the nature of reality.

I truly hope my book serves you well and helps you realize your potential musically, spiritually and financially. I wrote it with one thing in mind; allow me to help others succeed in the music business.
