The department serves three purposes:  to provide training to qualified students for the music profession, to supply an area of artistic enrichment for nonmusic majors, and to create a genuine musical influence on the entire university family.  Students wishing to follow careers in professional teaching or performance should pursue the appropriate program.  Students completing the degree with a major in music with teacher certification will qualify to receive the All-level Provisional Certificate, vocal or instrumental.  This latter program will qualify successful candidates as teachers of music for all grades in Texas under certification regulations established by the Texas Education Agency.
